Senior Software Engineer, Infrastructure Automation (m/f)

Rakuten is a Japanese electronic commerce and Internet company based in Tokyo, Japan. Its e-commerce platform Rakuten Ichiba is the largest e-commerce site in Japan and among the world’s largest by sales.  Rakuten has expanded its business globally, through expanding its own services, and through acquisitions and joint ventures.

As Rakuten grows, the need for extensive infrastructure automation and management becomes paramount, as well as the establishment of a set of clear global standards for development and operations staff.  The Rakuten Standard Platform is a new project with a global vision: to design and implement a fully automated, standard platform built on proven technology, identically deployed to all Rakuten datacenters around the world, for Rakuten developers and operations staff in multiple timezones.

The Rakuten Standard Platform is still in its bootstrap phase.  We are a very small project team working on a proof-of-concept design and implementation of this platform.  While Rakuten is a huge company, this project can almost be considered an internal start-up.

We are looking for skilled engineers to work under the supervision of the technical lead, designing and implementing Chef recipes and cookbooks for all components in our infrastructure.  All code would be checked for quality and covered with unit and/or integration tests.  You should have a wide range of experience in development, systems, and operations — a true DevOps mentality — as that will have a great impact on the quality of your Chef code, and its long-term viability.  You would need experience with a wide variety of infrastructure components as well.  We like independent workers and free thinkers who can self-direct, question existing norms, and who will bring their own strong independent contribution to the table.

While Chef automation would be the primary component of your job, many other aspects of the platform need to be scrutinized and debated to ensure an optimal yet pragmatic design: virtualization, storage, testing, deployment, administration, etc.  Your intelligent input would be expected, along with a willingness to advance an opinion, and then to relinquish it as dictated by the circumstances and deadlines.

This is an ambitious project, and will have many challenges, technical and otherwise.  But it is a project of vast potential, and so we must ask a lot, and you must ask a lot as well.
